If your computer is locking up something other than putty is broken. You
could re download putty and see if the executable has somehow been
corrupted, but putty is a solid piece of software, and a single
executable.

Seriously, I use putty on dozens of computers with different
circumstances. Changing putty for Secure CRT would be a case of treating
the symptoms while ignoring the illness. Unless you can identify where
the problem lies I'd suggest backing up your files and doing a reinstall
- and yes SuSE 8.2 would be a great choice, though SuSE 9 is out later
this month. It incorporates some of the features from the new 2.6 kernel
if you're feeling adventurous.
