I think that "drowning out" idea came from Hormel. Hormel isn't a good
source because they aren't going to say truthful things like "people laugh
about SPAM because it sucks!" To their credit, they do have a good sense
of humor about the product in their SPAM Museum.
But still, the use of 'spam' for junk e-mail comes originally from the
Monty Python skit. It won't be easy to know *exactly* how it took on its
new meaning.
