I've not had any trouble connecting to FreeBSD, OBSD, SuSE, RH, or Mandrake with SSH using putty, and I've been able to telnet to each of those with putty, as well as to Cisco switches.
What trouble have you had? Putty has been by far the most reliable and problem-free program I've had on a Winbox.
