CD-R's are fragile. I have CD-R's I burned in '97 that won't work
anymore.
Get used to copying data. Put the CDs on your hard disk. When you
upgrade computers, copy the data over.
For the ultimate in longevity, transfer your pictures to film and store
it in the freezer. (I follow the mailing list of AMIA, the Association
of Moving Image Archivists.)
It's an interesting business idea to start a data-backup company, where
you upload your data and it's guaranteed to be available as long as you
pay your yearly fee.
