> "Just because everybody is doing it doesn't make it right."
True, but then I'm not in the position to hire anyone so I can't do
better. Of course I always figured if I did have a company I'd probably
pay everybody (myself included) the same wage. A CEO is no more
important than the programmers and programmers are no more needed than
janitors.
Did you read the article on /. the other day about money distribution in
our economy and the way it's likely to get ever worse as robotics and
automation become more common? Very interesting IMO. I don't quite agree
with the author on all points but his suggestion that we tax the rich to
give out a set allowance for each citizen's cost of living seemed good
to me. I don't think at this point I'd go quite as high as he suggested
($25k/yr) but maybe $500-$1000 garenteed income per month would be a
good idea. He suggested it could replace social security, welfare, etc
and help keep the economy moving while keeping the wealth from all
shifting to the rich (as fewer and fewer employees are needed) while
giving people the resources they need to spend their time doing more
creative things like writing books or programming. At first thought it
sounds expensive (150million citizens * $12,000/yr) but if you consider
the amount of corporate welfare and such we're giving out (or how much
we're spending to defend the oil in Iraq) then it doesn't seem unfair to
expect them to give the money back. Of course such an allowance would
keep migrating back towards the rich anyhow as people spent the money so
it'd hardly be harmful to their wealth and the government could colllect
taxes each time that wealth was respent which of course helps keep the
government running.
