decent aluminum ones, but the other thing we discovered is that the
current makes of registers are about 5" shorter than they used to be.
You can order different sizes, but to get the old standard size costs

Nonsense.  Between Home Depot (better trained employees) and Lowes
(cheaper) you can find a wide variety of registers.  They are in the
same standard sizes they've been in for many years (Most common =
2|4|6|8 x 10|12|14 for floor).  And both stores have a variety of
options... Polished brass anyone; wrought iron?  I haven't seen
aluminum: most are steel.  Yes there are cheap plastic ones.  Having
rehabbed a former rental house into a home myself, I've had plenty of
opportunity to learn who has what.
