I began using the noatime option with my filesystems on a trial basis a
while back and thought maybe I'd mention it here. This option keeps your
filesystems from tracking access time. I've tried it with both Ext3 and
ReiserFS and it seems to reduce CPU load significantly (seems to about
half the CPU usage of file operations) and possibly boost the speed a
little. In the past I've had scripts that required access time to
function properly but I don't use them anymore and I've not noticed any
problems due to turning access time off. I'd suggest everyone try
disabling it if you want to improve the performance of your computer.
Just add 'noatime' to the filesystems options in fstab.
