It certainly is good to note. Not just because the disease was killing
people and now is not, but because it was a striking demonstration that we
have gotten much better at controlling epidemics, and that we can form a
world-wide consensus to act on these in close to real-time.
I honestly have to say that I thought we would be toast when the Chinese
turned out to have been misleading for so long, but even *they* did the
right thing once the stakes had been made clear. And I think they are
more likely to do the right thing sooner in the future, although it's
still not clear if they are now finally moving to spread information about
and spend money to fight their potentially horrific AIDS situation.
