I don't eat oranges, and everyone I've ever seen eat an orange started with cutting it in half, so I wouldn't know.
That would explain why cartoon bananas are always split at the tip. Of course, the only time I've seen it opened that way on american cartoons was slapstick. They squeeze from the stem, and the banana pops out of its peel.
