I have tried to do less complicated things with Word and failed. Posted in their tech support newsgroup and got the answer 
"Not supported. Why would you ant to do that?"

unix -- seems like it won't work but does
Mac -- seems like it will work but doesn't
Windows -- it seems like it won't work and doesn't
