The real problem is not lack of women, it's the complete nonexistence of
meetings. Am I wrong? When are you having meetings? The sortware demo
idea is great, but who is offering to demo? If the MLUG President isn't
going to try to move forward with a meeting/demo/etc., maybe someone else
should be voted into office.
Regarding alcohol: You know that MLUG should not have alcohol at official
MLUG meetings. That's a bad idea for several reasons, some of them legal.
But, no matter how anyone feels about alcohol, a lot of people like it, so
why doesn't one of those people just write to the MLUG members list and
say "I'll be at XXXX for a beer on YYYYY night at ZZZZ o'clock." Pick a
happy hour somewhere, or whatever, and go for it. It's not an official
MLUG meeting and people who don't want to drink or be around drinkers can
stay away from it. Who knows, you might meet people you like and write
programs together. If another member wanted to organize a similarly
informal meeting at a place that did not serve alcohol, s/he is free to do
so.
Regarding women: True, there aren't a lot of women in MLUG, and I don't
know of a good way to get them into MLUG or to attend a meeting. That
doesn't mean it's impossible to find women who are interested either in
Linux or in the men of MLUG. Maybe the women who are already in MLUG can
do something to encourage more women to join. Also, I know that some of
you guys live in Missour and actually know women (or are even married to a
woman!) -- have you actually tried to talk women into joining MLUG or
attending MLUG meetings? I'm not sure that we've done much recruiting.
