We're going to try Thursday and Friday backups to see if enough of it was saved. I'm fairly certain the problem occurred when she saved the file friday. I'm guessing she shut down the computer before it finished synchronizing. None of the repair tools (including the one posted here) worked, and I don't know enough about playing with individual bits to have much chance saving the file bitwise hacking it. 

Her teacher seems to be understanding about it though.
