Funny you should mention that. England turns out to have a shortage of
people in skilled trades (like plumbers and electricians), and in the
post-bubble economy, apparently not a few former IT workers have gone into
training for those kinds of careers...

Ouch. But this is another point: at some point in the last few years,
almost all of the janitors here at MU started being Spanish-speaking
immigrants. Not a very pretty job, but apparently a better deal than they
had outside of the US; so much so that they were willing to put up with
not a little danger to get here. I have a suspicion that among their kids
we could end up seeing some very interesting people...
