No, I wasn't counting VAT (17.5% on most goods other than basic food
stuffs - think no VAT on flour but 17.5% on chocolate biscuits) or petrol
(just under 4 pound or $6 per gallon). Domestic fuel (coal, gas etc) is
taxed at 5%.

Cars are subject to Road Tax of around 150 pounds per year, and obviously we
have our 115 pounds TV license - but for that we at least get decent ad free
TV from the BBC.

Most householders in employment will also pay a tax of circa 1,000 pounds
per year (on a per household basis) to their local council.

Russell.
