There's a book called "Intuition: Its Powers and Perils" which talks
a lot about stuff like this...and it debunks quite a few things people
think are true.

One example the author illustrates in his book is the idea that a
basketball players get "hot hands". The general public
believes that a basketball player is "in the zone" or has "hot hands" but
studies have been done on this and it's just random coincidence.
