I had a similar situation....
The printer was having trouble, usually buying a new ink tank was ~$20 but I
think it needed a new print head. Looked up the price of a printhead/tank
and it was ~$50. Right next to it was a brand new printer that was on sale
for $29, which came with the same printhead/tank as the old one.
So I bought the new printer, and just used it instead of the old printer -
it's still boxed up, so if the new printer ever broke, we could switch out
the printing assembly.
(..otherwise I think I'll look into refilling)

I haven't done much with it, but I hear that you can get these cartridges
refilled really inexpensively. I'm not sure how that works. Anyone doing
it?
