It turned out that my problem was in my switch. Since the switch itself
can act as a gateway to a WAN it was blocking XP from actting as the
gateway. Having switched the switch from a gateway to router mode
everything works okay. I'm not sure why XP thinks it is a good idea to set
the network card to 192.168.0.1 when sharing the dial-up adapter with the
network but that was easy enough to set back to what it needs to be to
work properly with my weirdo switch. For whatever reasons the Linksys
switch comes set as 192.168.1.1 and gives you hell trying to configure it
unless the machine you are using is in the 192.168.1.x range. XP isn't
that great as a gateway so far. It seems to lag the machine noticably with
just one active machine on the LAN. Also when XP is busy downloading it
all but blocks the LAN traffic. Maybe more RAM would fix these problems?
