An outline is a good idea and we did do a project plan. I was silly enough
to make an estimate off a very rough draft and agree to do the project
based off that rough draft and my need for income for a lot less than the
project was really worth. Mostly I agreed because I was already working on
the same idea as an opensource project and Kirk was okay with me reusing
my existing codebase and releasing the major parts of the project as
opensource. I had no idea I was about to lose my phone and net access (and
have my dog die, and be homeless, and have Jenni move to Vegas, etc.) so
those things didn't count in the estimate.

I find putting pressure on the developer counter productive. With me it
makes me nervous, makes it hard to concentrate on the code and not trying
to please the client, and makes the project stop being fun. I am much
slower if I'm not having fun. It makes it work so it's more grinding
through than staying up all night doing it for fun. It doesn't hafta eb a
usual thing to be fun. The tool I recently wrote to manage users with
Courier MTA would probably strike most people as boring but I had a lot of
fun making it. A lot of productivity depends on how I feel and think about
the project.

I work all the time so left to my own ends I'll get things done. I drag
around a notebook I make notes and code in even when watching tv and
reading and stuff. I just bought a tablet PC so I can actually produce the
code anywhere. It's what I do for fun.
