The library board -- with an anonymous $240,000 donation -- also
commissioned New York metal artist Albert Paley to create sculptures for the
library. But "Cypher" -- the two abstract pieces that frame the library's
entrance -- divided library patrons who were roaming amid the bookshelves
this morning.
"It's bright," Harris said. "It really draws your attention."
Katy Shi, a student at Grant Elementary School, said she likes the
sculptures.
"It looks kind of cool," the 6-year-old said.
"They're unique, very interesting," library patron Ross Griffith said. "It
takes some creativity to figure out what it means."
But another patron said he wants an explanation of what the artwork means
before forming a final opinion.
"It looks like a piece of farm machinery torn apart by a tornado and dumped
in the neighbor's yard," Nick Hinshaw said. "I just need more education on
this sculpture."
