See the other answers to your question (it's possible, but if your laptop
sound system isn't wonderful, the stereo is fancy enough and you are picky
enough you might not be completely pleased with the result, but hey...).

An answer to a question that you didn't ask is that powered speaker
systems for computers, which used to be really horrible in quality and
expensive besides, have started to get surprisingly good at decent price
points and are basically made for this kind of thing.  It may not replace
a really nice stereo system, but if you feel a need to have a second one
somewhere, it might be worth a look if you'd written them off in the past.
