I'd think whomever gets this working in an end-product first will become
very rich. I hope there is some garentee that the tech will be made
public.

True but overall it'd still be instantaneous. Most likely these "cables"
would be widespread as they'd take up very little physical space and
wouldn't require actually hassling with running cable etc. I could see
Earth as a huge network hub to all the other inhabitated places some day.
