I imagine humans as being reduced to data running in sort of a distributed
CPU-brain inside of a utility cloud (nano idea of a group of molecules
that can take on any shape their told and change as often as desired) such
that we could absorb or release atoms as needed to take on our body of
choice and we'd be able to let go of our entire body and travel across a
data network and create a new body for as long as it pleased us to have
it. So you probably wouldn't have to rent your body from Hertz but you'd
need some sort of system set up to provide the required raw materials to
form your body.

The VR would be like in the movie What Dreams May Come where each mind
sort of generates it's own reality and you could share your realities with
others but there really couldn't be any system crash because it'd all be
in your head. If the reality stopped hanging together properly you'd just
recreate it as you would a dream.

In part it's because I see this as where humanity and software are going
that I'm so brutally against intellectual rights, closed source, etc. I
fear what Microsoft or a similar company would do with such a future. To
me it's not really about the next version of Word or pirated movies and
music as it is this future.
