I think they're looking for the ability to have indexed files.  Does
the unix world have an equivalent?  A good description is at
http://www.djesys.com/vms/freevms/mentor/rms.html, for the interested. 
This is what gives us a great fast vehicle records database at Carfax. 
The file versioning in RMS really is a nice feature, too...
