Just rewire it. Even the best wireless will only deliver (at best) a 2x
to 2.5x gain over 10mbps. I think most are sitting right now at 11mbps,
and that is if the moon is in the right alignment with the sun, and the
groundhog didn't see his shadow.
Yes, it is worth it, because wireless will not deliver the bandwidth you
are seeking :(
Wireless will always be a security issue in one form or another,
especially since most systems rely on proprietary encryptions, (Because
of the need to transmit data quickly, you really don't have time for
much anyways, unless you want to start integrating some of the more
elaborate on the fly encryption systems [i.e. ATM modem stuff]), in
actuality, its just another entrance to your network to make sure is
properly secured.
Anyways, this is all moot, wireless doesn't have the bandwidth you are
looking for, wire with copper.

Subject: [MLUG - DISCUSSION] rewiring v. wireless in academic
environment
What do you all think?... We have a mixed network of some cat 5 and
something else (maybe cat 2) in our building and the network runs at 10
Mbps. Too slow! So we want to go faster, but the cat 2 accounts for
something like half of our wiring and it isn't up to spec for 100 Mbps.
So the question is this: Is it worth it to do a lot of cat 5 wiring to
replace the old cat 2 when we could just go to a wireless solution?
What
are the costs/benefits of wireless?
Is it easy to solve the security issues with wireless? I know that
people
have been logging into networks from their cars outside of office
buildings. I suppose encryption and authentication are needed and are
not
too hard to implement. Are wireless systems expensive to install?
Every
machine will need a new wireless adapter of some sort.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Mike
