Strangely, I had a very similar problem with my Chevette (the next car I
owned after the VW Wagon). I believe it was due to something called
"vapor lock" that would stop fuel from flowing into the carburator until
the engine cooled enough. I used to live it running in the parking lot
for long stretches so that I wouldn't have to wait to get it running.

PS. I realize now that I didn't own a Rabbit. It was a VW 412 Wagon. I
think it was pretty much a big Rabbit, so I wasn't far off. Funny that I
had all the same problems with the 412 Wagon that you had with the Rabbit.
