I had a '79 corolla wagon I bought in 95 or so after my 73 superbeetle got
totaled by my designated driver (who is a teatotaler incidentally).
That car was the blue cockroach, it just wouldn't die! Probably the
best $500 I've ever spent on a vehicle. Plus, since it was one of the
old RWD corollas, you could do some hellacious donuts and power slides
in the Columbia Mall parking lot when it snowed. Of course, the downside
was complete negative babe appeal, a lack of floorboards front and back
and a sometimes intermittent brake master cylinder. Oh, and the roof
caved in when you passed trucks on the highway, so i had to reach back
behind me and pound the roof to get it to pop back out again. But, man,
what a great car for a college town. I was going to buy a new 97 Corolla
wagon, but the sales guys at Machens were total jerks--they wouldn't even
talk to me unless I was ready to buy that day.
