Ford Prism, Geo Metro and other breeds of cattle out there need pushing out
of your SUV's tracks ;-)
It wouldn't be the first time something retractable had to be sturdy. Look
at the Dodge Minivans, they got in trouble because their tailgate lock
wasn't sturdy enough.

120mph impact (60 + 60 for each vehicle) or ricochet in a 10mph impact into
at most a 50mph impact if you happened to run into a brick wall right
afterwards, more likely much less. I'd rather live with a ditched car than
die in a totalled one. The worst downside I can see is that you no longer
will be able to push things over with your big old truck.
