OK, so I have some personal experiences with station wagons that
suggests it's not a very good idea. :-) Seriously, imagine driving
down the highway with a load of...stuff, having to stop more rapidly
than you like, and having said stuff lurch forward. Ouch. Now, I
know you could make a door beefy enough not to fail (at least if it
opened toward the bed, but that's not too useful), but it could be
tricky to make one that would continue to work (well) after a couple
of such incidents. My guess is that the risks and/or costs are too
high for the perceived benefits, especially since car makers are
happy to sell you a Suburban or something like that.
