People still have this bizarre notion that they're going to take
their Toyota Land Cruiser into the Outback or something (although
they don't), and somebody would whine horribly if they lost any
ground clearance. And the real problem with SUVs is not that cars
slide under them when they hit them from behind, but that the SUVs
themselves are roll-over prone (which is very bad), and especially
deadly to other cars when they hit you from in front or from the
side.
Now, the interesting thing about a semi is that 99% of the time
you're seeing one is either on a limited access highway where
everybody is moving in the same direction, or the semi is going 20
mph or less since it is attempting to maneuver in some crowded
street situation. The SUV is more likely to clock you from the
side because it's being driven like a car in much more car-like
situations.
