[MLUG - DISCUSSION] bitmap to vector graphics?

I remember using some tools by Corel to convert bitmapped images into
vector images (long long ago when I used Corel products) and I want to
practice writing some conversion tools of this nature myself. Up to now
I've used basic neural net techniques to play with this but I imagine
there is a simpler formula for tracing paths etc in the images. Anyone
have any pointers where to start?

I don't suffer from insanity... I enjoy every minute of it.
