...and thatone big X window can be fullscreen on the Mac or under cygwin
(if memory sereves)

I'm guessing that this is sometimes what you want, of course. I think my
single biggest interface gripe with both Windows Whatever and Aqua
currently is the lack of virtual space on the desktop (I like a 3x3 set-up
where I can scoot back and forth from bash to emacs to a browser to matlab
to...). But if you run such an environment in a (full-screened) window,
then it looks and feels just the same as "the real thing".
