The way I've done it in the past is that my central server downloads all
updates on a daily basis but does not install them. Then I point whatever
my update clients are to that central server. Then when a user (the proper
user) logs on it checks if updates are available and if so pops up the
update client and then the user can choose to update or not. On certain
low-importance machines all updates might be applied automaticlly without
asking. If you wanted to popup a window asking if the user wanted to
update you could do that instead of running the client. Just use a shell
script a gdialog (assuming you have Gnome installed).
