In case you might want to help sometime when I get to the actual coding of
this project this book http://www.makegames.com/sidescroller/ has some
useful information. Obviously a great deal of it is outdated as I don't
plan on doing any direct hardware hacks or worrying about EGA graphics but
as a whole it has a pretty good description of writing this sort of
game.
I do plan on including level editing tools etc but I don't think I'll
include a sprite editor as Gimp is probably fine for such things.
I plan on making the background tile based but items such as trees and
buildings will be sprites that can exist in any of multiple foreground
layers to give the illussion of depth. I think I'll make game and level
definition files written in XML and probably save game files also. Of
course scripting will be done in Python as Python objects seem to be a
perfect fit for such object oriented stuff.
