If you send SMTP too fast, and get uneven warming of the fiber in sub-zero temps, there is a possibility of cracking of the glass occurring. :-)

I was thinking maybe they intentionally slowed down SMTP so that fiber
could be more evenly warmed up by all the flame email. :-)
