I also have the APEX DVD Player. I have had no problems with this unit
at all it even plays VCD's instead of just saying that it does.

As a side note it has handled all of my DVDR attempts as well. This
could be the exception to the rule of "You get what you pay for"

My DVD player is a cheap APEX and it's gotten several months of hard use
without problems. So far I'm pretty happy with it.
