Well, people like to make charitable contributions to various things.
Sometimes they have many happy memories of their alma mater and they want
to give something back.  Often, the learning they did at the university
paid them back in life many times what it cost them to attend in the first
place.  A university is a good thing and worth promoting, in my opinion.
(Can I be a dean now? ;-)
