Having bought the DVD recently, and watched Star Wars I a few times, I think
that the main failing with this movie is that the acting is a little
lackluster.  I mean the characters sound convincing and all that, but there is a
lack of energy.  It sounds like they rehearsed it too many times, and the
spontaneity is lost.  They had a feature on the DVD - "The Making of Star Wars
I", and my feeling is that what happened is that the actors got lost inside all
the special effects.

I think that this is why we never really feel for the characters, or care what
happens to them.
