I dunno. I don't think anyone can speak for "MLUG" and I wonder if
individual letters aren't more persuasive than group statements. I've
thought about writing Carnahan who turns out to be on some interesting
committees such as Armed Services, Government Operations and Commerce
http://carnahan.senate.gov/committees.htm but things seemed to be moving
so fast and the language is so technical and disjointed that I've never
known quite what to say. It does look like PATRIOT (these guys don't
mind being obvious, do they?) isn't as bad as Ashcroft's original
proposal
http://www.eff.org/Privacy/Surveillance/20011001_eff_wiretap_pr.html and
it looks like the Senate may be a restraining influence
http://www.senate.gov/~leahy/press/200110/100401a.html
<http://www.senate.gov/%7Eleahy/press/200110/100401a.html> I'm a little
encouraged simply because Congress hasn't acted as fast as Ashcroft
would like.

Perhaps you could float a version 0.1 to give us an idea of what you
have in mind. Personally I would save the DMCA/SSSCA stuff for another
letter and focus on ATA/MATA/PATRIOT etc. because I'm afraid it has
already come to the point where some people can't tell the difference
between alleged copyright violations and mass murder.
