In my opinion all of these systems, Dell, Gateway, Compag and HP are so full
of proprietary hardware that they make upgrading nearly impossible unless of
course you buy your upgrades from the parent company. Of course this is what
they are hoping you would do.

The only reason I can see for buying a system like this is for the support.
This is what I tell everyone who talks to me about buying a new computer.
Yes of course you can often buy a system from these manufacturers for much
less money than you could build one for, but then again when you build your
own, something I do exclusively for my home systems, you know exactly what
you are getting and more often than not you are getting as a whole much
better equipment than you are going to get from any of these other
companies.

I actually had a guy tell me that Hewlitt Packard was nothing more than a
high priced Packard Bell. I would have to agree with that after some of the
HP computers I have worked on. Of course HP does a much better job on their
printers though.

I have a Compaq laptop, and if I had it to do over again I would have bought
a Dell. The HP /Compaq merger doesn't do much to affect me though so I will
not lose sleep over it.
