Maybe, but look who's living in Minneapolis now...

Something that gets lost in the shuffle these days is the stunning
audacity of Compaq's "Screw you, IBM" strategy of the 80s and early 90s.
They were also a key contributor to the EISA effort that essentially
neutralized the IBM micro-channel architecture (IBM's last stab at true
domination of the PC industry).  Of course, this eventually begets the
old VESA busses for video, which mutates into PCI when Intel decides not
to play marbles with everybody else, which begets Intel as chipset
behemoth and...what goes around, comes around.
