Compaqs are still as worthless as ever. My friends who have the modern
versions complain of the same problems I have with my 5 year old model.
HP's I've never liked, but mostly because of their packaging. HP isn't as
well known for good computers as they are for good peripherals, but with the
aquisition of DEC, they'd have to have worked hard not to be good
competition for IBM and Sun. Compaq has an excellent reputation for their
servers, though I've never had one to play with, so if they pool their
engineers and don't find some new and innovative way to fubar their product,
this should be interesting. Simply combining the Compaq servers and the DEC
Alphas into one corp I think would outshine IBM easily, and would give Sun a
run for its money. If we're really lucky, they'll stop their PC
manufacturing and concentrate solely on servers. Perhaps Wal-Mart will sell
Gateways or Dells if we get rid of HP and Compaq PC's. (yes, Dell is a lot
better than Gateway, but I have a better chance of affording a Gateway than
a Dell.)
By the way, anybody know what's happening with Madrake? I heard they were
going server-only, but having seen it available at Wal-Mart, I was wondering
if they would still produce 8, or if someone was going to take their place.

I'm not so interested in their PCs. A little while ago, Compaq bought
Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), makers of the Alpha machines. Those
are speedy unix machines (we have some here at U Minn running VMS -
blech!) HP also makes higher end machines, but I don't know much about
them. So this will position the two companies well to compete more
effectively with Sun and IBM. That has to be part of the motivation for
the merger/acquisition. Someone tell me if you understand this better.
I agree that the Compaq PCs were not so great (but I haven't seen one in a
few years, so I don't know if they improved recently).
