Good question. The stock market today seemed to suggest that HP will
get the worst of it. (HWP went down almost 19% today, while CPQ went
down "only" 11%.)
Actually, my interpretation of the market's reaction is this:
HWP sellers thought: "WTF? Buy Compaq, the company that nearly bought
flaming death with their previous dorky acquisitions? Sell this puppy
now!"
CPQ sellers thought: "Huh? We're in such bad shape that management sold
us to a chief competitor for only a modest amount more than our shares are
at now? We must be going down, so it's time to bail..."
Kind of a negative synergy thing.
