They are both reserved ranges that every one uses on private networks.
Depends on where you are at. The reserved networks are 192.168.0.0/16,
10.0.0.0/8, 127.0.0.0/8, and 172.16.0.0/12. This has got to be a local
thing, because any ISP worth their salt routes that to /dev/null to prevent
people who use those ranges internally from stepping on each others toes. In
fact, I heard someone say that those reserved ranges were not made for
people to use like this, and in the future it might break something. An
other interesting range is the Class D range of addresses (224.0.0.0/4).
Those are reserved for Multicast addressing. If you ever see one of those,
then it's not what you would normally think it is. I had someone complain
that they were getting hits from a Multicast address. Turned out that some
application was using multicast, and they didn't realize that's what it was.
Just some things to watch for.
