If you nix Netscape's cache and install Squid w/ a decent sized cache (I
currently use about a gig of space) it'll outclock either IE or Netscape
easily. I can routinely load pages faster on my Linux box running Netscape
or Mozilla over a 14k modem than on a Windows box running IE and Netscape
over a 56k modem simply because a good mainy page elements are already
stored locally and Squid seems to be very effecient. It also cuts the
number of Netscape crashes way down.
IE does handle certain pages faster than Netscape. However I've seen a
good many it handles slower also.. and worse, a lot it handles
incorrectly.. especially forms and pages w/ lots of images it handles
incorrectly albeit faster than Netscape.
Umm any reason MLUG couldn't host our own Squid server? I'd bet a lot of
us use the same sites a lot and for those on campus a local proxy server
could make a lot of difference.
