That's because Verizon owns the phone line. Problem is that the phone line
is a wire. It's not cost effective for another company to have to run a
whole new system of phone wires in order to compete (not in this area),
seeing as how it has taken about 75 years to get to this point. Besides, how
many sets of phone wires would you want running to your house. It's like the
water company or sewer. Hey, lets deregulate sewer next! :-) Some things
just lend them selves to being utilities. Lets privatize and deregulate the
road system, all the way down to your drive way... Then try and get a
different road provider. :-)
Yeah, there are ways to provide phone service over other existing and easily
extended systems, but DSL depends on the use of the copper to your house,
and unless someone strings new copper(which would be expensive) you have to
buy the actual DSL part from the phone company, or who ever provides the
copper access point you plug the modem into. Every one does. Same thing with
T1's. Unless an alternate provider came along and strung new copper, they
have to buy the copper from the phone company. In some large cities, that's
a possibility. In the Columbia area? You can forget it until you get about
the size of Springfield. It's not really crazy, it's kind of how things have
to work.

Subject: Re: [MLUG - DISCUSSION] DSL in the area ??
Well, as I understand it, they just ran out of space for more DSLs. They
may have resolved this, though. Verizon has the local DSL market in a
choke hold. Everyone else that services DSL is simply reselling the
service. It's crazy, but oh well. At least, that's my understanding.
They told my aunt on the phone that there simply was no more space for the
time. Again, this may be resolved. I don't want to cause heart attacks.

Neil
