I agree with you about doing things other than "just driving" with a
vehicle... and actually, I don't have a problem with a "big engine" either,
but why not improve the efficiency that those engines use fuel? Most of the
fuel doesn't actually get used toward powering the engine, it's just wasted
energy... fuel injection systems are more efficient than carburetors.
and actually I don't think that a scaling system is the answer either. It
was a thought along the lines of our graduated tax system, those with
more/use more, pay more. Also, we don't have the same artificial supply
control on milk production as we do on oil production.
And I'm seriously considering trading in my Honda Accord (35 mpg highway/ 25
city) for the Insight. I do try my best to avoid waste. The current price of
gasoline is driving my thought, but having paid for gas in Germany way back
when, I've always known that we get off cheap. We are now beginning to see
the shock of what most of the globe had been paying for gas.

Some of us like to do things besides just drive on the roads. It's called
motorsports.
Plus the 'vette lets you get to the speedlimit faster, nothing wrong with
that.
As for your sliding scale, should you have to spend more per gallon of milk
than I do just because you use two cups per bowl and I only use one? Unless
you drive a Honda Insite your in no place to comment on someone elses gas
comsumption.

Not to speak for Neil, but to use what I think his point is, why do people
decide they need a big V8 engine when they are not using the power to haul
things, and they can't legally drive 110 mph down the highway?
The idea of a Corvette in and of itself is not ridiculous, but if you cannot
use the extra features of that car, why do you need it? As a personal
example, while living in Germany I drove a Porsche. Nice car, looked cool,
went fast... and I could drive it fast on the Autobahns... I never
considered bringing it back here... the engine would never of been happy
driving 55 mph (back then...) on a highway.
Here is my radical idea... either ration gasoline (to control the price
artificially) or make people pay on a sliding scale based on the fuel
efficiency of their car. Gas guzzling vehicles reduce the supply quicker,
thus aiding in driving up demand. I watch my consumption and I get upset
when my city mileage drops below 25 mile per gallon.
just my $2.00 (inflated by gas prices)
