I have a question to use as a basis here for this discussion. What do you
consider decent gas mileage?
Also, the thing with the mini SUV's ( Sportage, tracker/vitara, CRV, Rav-4,
and liberty) is it's a hybrid between having a small truck and a car. In a
car the size of the trunk and back seat limits you in what you can haul,
even if you have a hatchback or wagon. In a truck, it gets really
interesting trying to get more than 2 or three people in the cab. Now if you
take a Sportage or Tracker, you also get a truck based vehicle ( the CRV,
and the Rav-4 are based on cars, and aren't meant for off road use, just
rough road use) that can go off road ( no, I'm not smoking any thing). I
swear it's true. There are people who take their trackers and sportages off
road all the time. I've done it, and it's cool how well they drive off road!
What I think is funny is that there are a lot of people who buy them that
would be just as well off with a station wagon. Not me, I would have had a
hard time getting that clothes washer in a station wagon. Same thing with
the small freezer. Same thing with the 12000 GSR, the APC bypass panels (
those were beastly!), the 1/2 ton of batteries... And then there was the one
time when I went home and hauled 5 adults across three fields and through
two creeks to go see the neighbors ( Don't ask :-)
Thing is, they are useful... I just don't see many people putting them to
good use.

Probably not, and I'll have to admit I never understood these weird little
vehicles.

I think the most likely vehicle to run you off the road around here is
indeed an F-350. But a lot of this does have to do with your location. In
San Diego, the total roadhogs more generally drove Toyota Landcruisers,
and, I can assure you, *nothing* can put you up on the sidewalk like a
Humvee suddenly deciding to change lanes. So far, I have only seen two
Hummers in Columbia, but I'm fearing for the future. Ah, I can see it
now: An F-350 doing 65 on Scott Blvd. meets a Humvee doing the same
thing going the other way...who said jousting is dead? :-)

Actually, that depends on the model. The new truly huge Honda Oddysey is
a beast, but other minivans actually get semi-reasonable mileage. And the
saving grace there is that they, unlike the ridiculous empty pickup
trucks, are at least usually carrying more than one person, so the
effective mileage per person-mile is often pretty decent.
