OK,
I'm going to stand up for lawyers. There are good lawyers and there are
bad lawyers. There are good sysadmins and there are bad sysadmins. The
reason lawyers get so much flak is because they do their job. Their job is
to represent someone who doesn't know the law as well as they. This is what
they do.
When you're sick you to a doctor, who knows medicine, to help you get
better.
When you're in trouble you go to a lawyer, who knows law, to help you
get out of trouble.
Doctors are not asked to chose who they help and who they don't help, are
they? Lawyers, however, are held up as bad people because they help people
that some would consider morally bankrupt. A lawyer represents people no
matter what he/she thinks of them personally. Doctors do the same. You don't
see ER docs saying - "You got shot trying to rob some guy and his wife? I'm
going to let you die rather than save you." and you don't see lawyers saying
"You killed someone trying to rob a bank? I'm not going to represent you
adequately to make sure you die rather than save you."
Now, there are more angles to this debate than this. My argument focusses on
why people don't like lawyers. If my base reasoning is not sound, the rest
of the argument is null and void as well.

Many lawyers just like to argue and be right all the time. Most of the
people I know that became lawyers did it because they like to argue with
people and have lots of money, which are pathetic reasons. Repeat after
me: personality flaw.

Neil
