Keep in mind that in principle I agree with you. Systems that are the least
bit important to anyone should be both rubust and secure. The justice
system is the *last* resort anyone should use to address his woes. Anyone
who goes after a hacker should know what he's getting into (retaliation
isn't legal, but it's a fact).

I'm merely pointing out that the law is on the side of the recipient of a
scan, not the scanner. Whether or not that makes sense or is justified is
each person's opinion.

Personally, I think it's justified, but it gets abused.

I would never trust anyone who broke into my system, under any but the most
bizarre circumstances, especially since I'm not out cracking into other
peoples' systems to start with.

No. It's your system. You can do whatever you want to your system. In
fact, it even explicitly falls within MU's AUP, since you are using UMC
resources to strengthen a system that may or may not have privileged access
to UMC systems (and thus, you strengthen everyone's security). Second,
you're probably learning something as you go, which falls within the Univ's
mission.
