Script kiddies are idiots. They really are. Sometimes it's fun to give one
trouble when they think they are elite and will own you. Thanks to the
movie "Hackers", script kiddies are under the illusion that an IP is just
like a telephone number, and all you have to do is enter it into a program
and you've h4x0r3d them.

For great fun on the IRC, tell the little punks that your ip is 127.0.0.1,
and that they are too unskilled to hack it. I did this one time, and a guy
claimed he got in, uploaded viruses, and was going to use my machine as a
Wingate (a hacked Windows box used to commence other illegal
activites). When I told him that 127.0.0.1 was his local loopback, then
told him what a loopback was, he promptly left me alone.

Thanks to both the IRC and my roommate getting a trojan, I get 10-20 scans
a week for SubSeven Trojan, Netbus, BO, etc. It's gotten so bad that I'm
seriously considering putting my firewall up. You should see my hosts.deny
log on securityscan3.iats.missouri.edu. Seven pages long. The university
is a breeding ground for jackasses with decent security software and not
enough brains to use them properly.

The one thing that really bugs me is that sometimes it is extremely hard
to report abuse because of the bureaucratic crap of many bigger ISPs. I
really wish ISPs would all setup standard locations, like
abuse.domain.com, where people can report abuse. I've given up on
reporting problems to ISPs. I just deal with the little bastards myself if
they give me enough problems at home. As for work, I really don't care. My
IATS machines are locked down hard to prevent compromises.

The Computing and Network Security Office will be looking for a full-time
Disaster Preparedness position over the summer, if anyone is
interested. It's full-time, though. Not a summer job or a student
job. Contact Greg for more information.

Regards,
Neil
